Ranking Data in Excel

Master the RANK Function with a Free Tutorial

The Excel RANK function returns the position of a number in a list of numbers. RANK can rank values from largest to smallest and is a useful tool for anyone who uses Excel regularly.

Quick Example

=RANK.EQ(Number, Reference, [Order])

Number: the value to be ranked

Reference: range of values to be ranked

Order: optional argument, detailing how the values will be ranked

  • "0" (or omitted) means that the ranking will occur in descending order
  • "1" means that the ranking will occur in ascending order

Duplicate values are each given the same rank (however, the RANK.AVG function can be used to average duplicate values)
